Working flexibly, 5 days per week which will include regular weekends, evenings and early mornings on a rota basis.

Our core operating hours are between 6am – 10pm daily, so the ability to work flexibly across 5 days of the week will be required. Variations in working hours will always be discussed in advance.

The role
As an Assistant Manager you’ll be supporting the Crematorium Manager and will play a major role in the hands-on day to day operation of the site. You will support with leading and developing the site team and work with the Crematorium Manager to create a culture that reflects our values.
Overall Accountability:
- Support the Crematorium Manager in the commercial performance of the site (sales, cost control and profit in particular).
- Deputise for the Crematorium Manager when required.
- Optimise the efficient use of site resources including staff, facilities and ensue they are fit for purpose and we are service ready at all times.
- To work, reflecting our values, to create an excellent working environment for your team, allowing them to provide the best service they can.
- Ensure adherence to the “Code of Practice” as laid down by The Federation of British Cremation Authorities.
- Develop and manage your team effectively under the guidance of the Crematorium Manager.
- Ensure all plant and equipment is maintained to a high standard and in line with company policy.
- Ensure the highest standards of health and safety and ensure compliance with Westerleigh Group H&S policy and manage the site team to put safety first at all times.
- Ensuring day-to-day operations run as smoothly as possible and follow the complaints procedure and escalate when needed in accordance with Westerleigh Group Complaints policy.
- Liaise with Distinct Cremations over the booking of direct cremation services.
- Undertaking memorial sales appointments and follow up processes including liaising with suppliers, keeping clients updated and carrying out internments once memorials have been installed.
- General cleaning duties – All public and staff areas as required.
- Knowledge and understanding of memorial range in order to provide effective advice to families.
Learning all areas of the site, supporting the team and overall operation:
- Chapel - Welcoming families and Funeral Directors attending and ensuring things run smoothly.
- Cremation – You will be fully trained and work towards an accredited FBCA qualification. Involved in the end to end cremation process and ashes management. You will need to be able bodied as there will be manual handling involved in this process.
- Administration - Answering the telephone with great customer service skills, using Chronicle / Word / Excel, helping families with queries / collection of ashes / planning a service to showing a family around the grounds to view memorial options.
- Ad hoc work – for example some basic gardening, getting involved in a Christmas service and making sure the site is tidy and presentable.
This role requires flexibility and pulling together as one team to support each other and provide the exceptional care and service that we are known for.
About you
- Previous experience as an Assistant Manager / Team Leader / Supervisor / Management experience or completion of MIT preferred.
- Ability to deputise for Crematorium Manager when required.
- Able to travel to other sites for cover when required.
- Loyal and trustworthy with the ability to deal with confidential information.
- Performance driven.
- Interest in personal development and a commitment to developing skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
- You will need to be able bodied as manual handling will be part of this role. PPE will be provided for your safety.
- Emotionally resilient and organised with excellent attention to detail.

- Flexible in approach to working hours.
- Comfortable communicator able to speak to people in a caring and understanding manner.
- Good level of IT skills and comfortable with Word / Excel and emails.
